User research
Summary
To understand our users, I interviewed gamers ranging from casual to avid. I created individual and aggregated empathy maps to synthesize their feedback. I initially expected similar gaming experiences, but the interviews revealed diverse interests, game preferences, and platforms used.
Looking through thousands of games is a chore. Our users want to be able to refine their search to hone in on the games they love.
Often game libraries fill up and things get lost in the shuffle. Allowing users to organize and plan ahead of time could keep them focused and organized.
Users usually find out about games via word of mouth or social media. If we could enable users to follow users with similar interests it would help inform their decisions.
Being able to group games into certain categories based on their interests would help users cut through the noise and focus on the games they want to play.
Persona
Problem Statement
Lucky is an avid gamer who needs a way to organize her game library based on her interests. She is an informed gamer and is overwhelmed with the many options available, but not catered to her individual tastes.
User Journey Map
Lucky is informed and in tune with what is happening in the gaming space. She wants a more customizable, community oriented experience when looking for new games to play next.
Paper wireframes
To offer diverse navigation from the homepage, I focused on three key areas: featured games for immediate visibility, an explore genres section to cater to varied user interests, and user-curated playlists to leverage the communal aspect of gaming.

Digital wireframes
Giving users more control, in addition to saving games they want to play I wanted to enable them to group games into custom categories. Examples could include organizing games by mood, genre, platform, etc. These Playlists act as their gaming identity. Adding a social element allows our users to share playlists with other users.
Lo-fi Prototype
From the homepage users can select or search for games. They can filter their results, add to, create, and follow playlists from other users.
Usability study:
Findings
Round 1
ꔷ Users need a more robust search with different categories of suggestions.
ꔷ Design a clear way to show off progress of games users are currently playing.
ꔷ Display recommendations for users based on what other users they follow are playing.
Round 2
ꔷ Users want a way to integrate with other apps that they use when gaming.
• Add clarity to what happens when users create or add a new game to a playlist.
Hi-fi mockups
I am currently referencing my first usability study and creating high fidelity mockups. I will then create a hi-fi prototype before conducting another usability study to gather more insights and iterate further. Stay tuned while I finalize this case study!
